England tour of South Africa, First Test Last Day
South Africa Cricket: England is currently touring South Africa for a series of four tests, five ODIs and two T-twenties. The two teams are top ranked cricketing nations in the world. Currently, two sides are playing first test match of the test series.
Today, on the fourth day of the first test in Durban, England has a strong grip over this match. In the first inning, England made 303 all out which was replied with 214/10 by South Africa. In the second innings, England made 326/10. In second and last innings of South Africa, they are in hot waters with 136 for six wickets remaining. They need 280 more to win with their main batting line back in the pavilion.
This test match proved a real test of nerves for always-in-form South African side. England has definitely outperformed South Africa.
England started a dominating game in their first innings from the first day of the match. England took a confident start and scored 303 for the loss of 10. N R D Compton, J W A Tylor and J M Bairstow scored 85, 70, 41 respectively and provided solid grounds for England in this match. Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel were the successful bowlers from the South African side with four wickets each.
South African first innings on the second day of the match was a disaster. All team was bowled out by English attack in 81.4 overs for only 214 runs. Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali were the most successful bowlers for England. Both took 4 wickets each.
In their second innings, English side made their hold on match even stronger. They smashed fast 326 runs in 102.1 overs only, increasing their total lead to 416 runs. Again Compton, Bairstow and J Root were the players who scored more than fifty each and provided England solid grip over this test. From Protease, the most successful bowler was D Peidt who took five wickets for 153 runs.
At the end of the fourth day, South Africans are playing with six wickets in hand chasing a giant total of 416. They need to score 280 more to win this match or they have to play for 140 overs to draw. There are slim chances for South Africa to win this match. The reason is on this ground, South Africa has never chased such a big total in the second innings. The highest score they ever achieved on this ground was 370. If we talk about the option of a draw, South Africa was able to play 140 overs in only one test in its history when they saved a match against Australia in 2012. So there is outside chance that South Africa save this match, let alone the idea of winning.
Still there is one day and 140 overs left in this match. Proteas has deviated from patterns in the past. Still they have six wickets in hand and a winning player, AB de Villiers, on the crease. There is still some charm left in the match. Hope it keeps its charm till the last session.
